On the off chance I’m winning the lottery this month, I thought I’d do a little research into these rare Dunhill Aquarium table lighters I saw in Hong Kong a few years ago. I have the day off and don’t have anything else to do anyway. I was going through some old photos this morning and hadn’t thought of them for a while. Which is weird, because I distinctly remember falling in love with these shiny, extravagant lighters. I’m a bit of a magpie, I know. With items like these, it is always pretty much impossible to determine what they’re really worth. This one right here could be yours for €9,645 if you must have it now. But then again, if you’re a bit more patient, you might just find an original Aquarium lighter for on Catawiki for a lot less. One lucky buyer on Catawiki.com, for instance, apparently snapped one up for less than a third of a price.
The Dunhill Table Lighters were hand-made in the 1950’s by a man called Ben Shillingford. And when he stopped working for Dunhill, they apparently couldn’t find anyone who could make them as well as he did so they just threw in the towel. Imagine that! Needless to say, Dunhill Aquarium Table Lighters are perfect if you’ve got money to burn. I think I’ll play it safe for now and stick to my plastic Bic lighter, thank you very much.
